ポール・A・サミュエルソン (Paul A. Samuelson), 1915-2009
ポール・A・サミュエルソンは、おそらく他のだれよりも、20世紀後半の主流経済学を体現した人物だろう。史上最も成功した経済学教科書 (1948) の著者ポール・サミュエルソンは、経済学「エスタブリッシュメント」の、文句なしの具現化と見なされてきたし、それも決して不当な評価とはいえない。結果としてサミュエルソンは、経済学の良い面悪い面ほとんどすべてについて、賞賛され、罵倒されてきたのだった。
サミュエルソンの最も有名な論文『経済分析の基盤』 (1947) は、 新古典派経済学の復活をもたらし、経済学の数学化時代を引き起こした、記念碑的な著作である。サミュエルソンは戦後期において、ミクロ経済学の パレート派復興と、マクロ経済学における新ケインズ派総合の主導者だった。
かれは1930年代のハーバード世代における天才児で、シュムペーターとレオンチェフに師事していたが、伝説的なまでに傑出した経済学理論の理解力を見せた (裏付けのない小話ではあるが、サミュエルソンが博士論文の審査を受けたとき、審査会の終わりにシュムペーターはレオンチェフに向かってこう言ったという。「で、ワシーリー、われわれは合格させてもらえたのかな?」)。ポール・サミュエルソンはMITに移り、そこで今世紀で最も強力な経済学部の一つを、自分を核として構築した。やがてそこにR.M. ソローも加わり、一時期はサミュエルソンの共著者にして共謀者ともなった。
サミュエルソンの経済学に対する個別の貢献は、多すぎてここには挙げきれない——かれは経済学における最も多産な学者でもあるのだ。かれの経済理論の典型的な手法は『基盤』 (1947) に示されたように、以下の二つのルールに沿ったもののようだ。ちなみにこれは、その後の新古典派経済学ほとんどにあてはまるルールだとも言える。そのルールとはあらゆる経済学の問題において (1) 変数を減らして、最小限の単純な経済関係だけを残す。 (2) できればそれを、制約つき最適化問題として書き直す。
ミクロ経済学では、顕示選好理論を考案した (1938,
1947)。効用計測問題と積分可能性に関する、これと関連研究によって、ドブリュー,
ジョージェスク=ローゲン、宇沢らの研究の道が開けた。また「対応原理」(1974) を通事て比較統計と動学の利用を導入した。これは一般均衡における動的安定性への貢献 (1941, 1944)で、実に実り多い形で適用されている。また現在では「バーグソン=サミュエルソン社会厚生関数」と呼ばれているものを導入した。また同じく有名だが、サミュエルソンは新古典派理論に「公共財」を導入した。
サミュエルソンは、現代生産理論の確立にも大きな役割を果たした。『基盤』(1947) は包絡線定理と 費用関数の完全な条件付けも行っている。また技術進歩の理論にも大きな貢献をした (1972)。資本理論への貢献も、議論はあるが有名だ。また初の「非代替」定理の一つを実証 (1951) し、ソローと共著の有名な論文 (1953) では、動的レオンチェフ体系の分析を創始した。この研究は、ロバート・ドーフマンとロバート・ソローと共にまとめた線形プログラミングに関する1958年著書で再検討されたのは有名だ。この本にはまた、線形フォン・ノイマン系における「ターンパイク」仮説への明晰な導入が見られる。サミュエルソンはまた、ケンブリッジ資本論争においてジョーン・ロビンソンの主要論敵だった——その議論では「代理」生産関数を導入し (1962)、その後(優雅に)折れて見せた (1966).
国際貿易理論では、かれはストプラー=サミュエルソン定理で知られ、ラーナーと独立に要素価格等価定理を発見している (1948, 1949, 1953) 。さらに(やっと)昔からの交易条件と資本フローを巡る「移転問題」を解決し、マルクス派の典型問題も解決 (1971)、その他の古典派経済学の問題も片付けた (1957, 1978)。
マクロ経済学では、サミュエルソンの乗数アクセラレーターマクロ動的モデル (1939) は当然有名だし、世界に フィリップス曲線を紹介した (1960) のも周知だ。また アレの「重複世代」モデルを広めたことも知られている。これはマクロ経済学や金融理論で、その後大量に応用されている。多くの点で、投機価格に関する研究 (1965) は実質的にファイナンス理論の効率的市場仮説を予見するものだ。分散投資 (1967) と「生涯ポートフォリオ」(1969) の議論も同じく有名だ。
新古典派経済学理論に対する多くの貢献により、ポール・サミュエルソンには1970年に ノーベル記念経済学賞が授与された。
