デニス・H・ロバートソンは、エドワード朝紳士の古典的な障害を送った。イートンを卒業、ケンブリッジのトリニティ大学で古典に親しみ、第一次世界大戦に出征、帰還してケンブリッジのフェローとなり、第二次大戦中は財務省で働いて、最後にナイトの称号を与えられている。

でも生涯は伝統的なものだったけれど、その業績はもっと勇敢で正統からはずれたものだった。ケンブリッジのガチガチの マーシャル派 とされることが多いけれど、ロバートソンの発想のもとは、「大陸」起源のものが多い。大陸の伝統に基づく ビジネスサイクル理論 (1915) を導入したし、金融理論に関する 1922 年の大評判となった小教科書や、1926 年のもっと詳しい著作は、クヌート・ヴィクセル や ストックホルム学派 からの引用がちりばめられている（ついでに『不思議の国のアリス』からの引用まみれでもある――これは長年のロバートソン流のクセだった)。1937 年に、ロバートソンは旧友のジョン・メイナード・ケインズ を、『一般理論』の 貯蓄と投資の関係に関する有名な論争 に引っ張り込んだ。
