ドン・パティンキン (Don Patinkin), 1922-1995.
シカゴ大学でオスカール・ランゲの指導を受け、お隣のコウルズ委員会での出来事にも半分首をつっこんでいたドン・パティンキンは、戦後期の金融理論について最高の権威として頭角をあらわした。その驚異の博士論文 Money, Interest and Prices (1956) は比肩するもののない力作で、経済学の深みをさらい、後に各種の分野で関心の的となる論点を引き出した――たとえばマクロ経済学の不均衡記述、ストックとフローの区別から生じる問題、均衡の安定性と経路依存性等々。その 1956 年論文は、新ケインズ派最高の成果として独特な力を持っている。
パティンキンの 1956 年論文における中心的な主張は (すでに1948 年から1954 年の一連の論文で発表されていたが) 金融理論と ワルラス派 の価値理論との融合だった。この作業は 新ケインズ派 の中心となっただけでなく、各種の ポストワルラス派 理論の支流を生み出すにあたっても重要な役目を果たした。この融合は、限界主義者たちを長いこと悩ませてきたもだが、セイの法則 の放棄と、効用関数の中にお金を含めることで実現されていた――つまり需要の均質性の原理も放棄されたわけだ。パティンキンの主張だと、貨幣数量説 はこれを放棄しないと成立しないのだ。
「パティンキン論争」 は、新古典派理論がお金を満足に扱えないという無力ぶりをあらわにしてしまったため、1960年代から1970年代にかけて、ポストワルラス派 によるミクロとマクロの結びつきの再検討を招くとともに、お金と信用に関する現代私論を再構築しようという無数の試みのきっかけともなった。
パティンキンはまた、ケインズの「硬直性 (rigidity)」解釈を構築するのに重要な役割を果たした (1948, 1949)。これは新ケインズ派総合の中心となる。自分で始めた金融論争に何度も参加しつつ、ドン・パティンキンは晩年には J.M. ケインズ の名研究者となり、すばらし本を二冊 (1976,
1982) 著すとともに、ポストケインズ派による独占的な解釈に異議を唱える論文をいくつか書いた。それと並行する シカゴ学派 の研究
(1981) はまた、自分はシカゴ学派の「"口承伝統」にしたがって研究してきたという フリードマン の主張を疑問視するものだった。ドン・パティンキンは、シカゴ大学を退官してからのほとんどの生涯を、エルサレムのヘブライ大学で過ごした。
