William Graham Sumner, 1840-1910

Influential Yale professor and Social
Darwinist, American counterpart of the British
evolutionary theorist, Herbert Spencer.
Defended radical laissez-faire as being justified by laws of evolution (esp. 1883).
Instrumental in reforming the American university system away from its old
"divinity-classics" roots and towards modernism. His famous analysis of
social norms are contained in his 1907 book.
