　影響力の高いイェール大教授で社会ダーウィニズム支持者、イギリスの進化理論家ハーバート・スペンサーのアメリカ版。急進的自由放任論が進化論で正当化されるといって擁護 (特に 1883)。アメリカの大学制度を、古い「聖書＝古典」重視からひきはがして現代化するのに大きな役割を果たした。社会規範についての有名な分析は 1907 年の著書を参照。
