English political philosopher and pamphleteer. Paine, a Quaker, came to America when he was 37. His 1776 classic was one of the inspirational documents behind the American Revolution. He later moved to France to observe (and participate) in the events of the revolution. His famous 1792 book was a defense of the French Revolution directed against Edmund Burke -- and it got Paine tried for treason and outlawed in England. He became an honorary French citizen and a member of the National Convention. When the Girondists fell from favor, Paine was thrown temporarily in jail, where he worked on his controversial tract on religion, Age of Reason. He returned to the United States in 1802, but despised for his religious views, Paine died a pauper and outcast. Although not very influential on the development of economics, he was a sufficiently famous and polarizing intellectual figure of the late 18th Century to merit inclusion on this website.
