ジェラール・ドブリュー (Gérard Debreu), 1921-
新ワルラス派一般均衡理論に対してジェラール・ドブリューが投げかけた輝かしい影響は、なかなか無視できるものじゃない。何年にもわたり、ドブリューはこの分野の標準を定めるとともに、数理経済学が検討すべきほとんどの問題を投げかけた(そして多くの場合にはその解決法を提供した)――この業績に比肩し得るのは、知的な同輩とも言うべきケネス・J. アローくらいだ。
ドブリューは、ブルバキ主義の Ecole Normale Superieure で数学の教育を受け、経済学はモーリス・アレー (Maurice Allais) の著作で学んだ。後にコウルズ委員会で、最も目立った活躍ぶりのメンバーとなり、その後 1962 年にはバークレーに移る。ドブリューの簡潔な傑作 The Theory of Value (1959) は、いまだに新ワルラス派理論の最も純粋で公理的な形での表現としては決定版となっている。
ドブリューの成果は比較的少ないけれど、その貢献は一つ残らず傑出したものだ。かれは独自に 厚生経済学の第一&第二基本定理を証明 (1951, 1954) し、効用関数が
選好順序を表現できる条件をゴリゴリ厳密に定めた (1954) 。K.J.アローとともに、ドブリューは競争均衡の初の単純な存在証明 を行った (1954)。また、均衡の集合は有限で、したがってその均衡が局所的に一意的だということを初めて証明した (1970)。
同じくらい根元的な業績として、ドブリューは (ハーバート・スカーフと共に) replicated economy における「core convergence」についての有名な理論 (1962, 1963) を編みだし、他のもっと一般化した core convergence
theorems のためのツールを考案 (e.g. 1967)、さらにそのrate of that convergence を初めて決めた (1975)。
ドブリューはまた、後の研究者のために多くの概念的な道筋を拓いた。「準均衡 (quasi-equilibrium)」の発想を導入 (1962)、財とその価格の束が、線形空間とその双対として表現できるという発想 (1954)、状態依存財を使って一般均衡に不確実性を統合 (1959)、測度空間上の位相で表現できる「隣接エージェント」の発想 (1969)、数理経済学に微分解析を再導入できるようにした「smooth preferences」の発想 (1972)、さらには無限次元財空間 (infinite-dimensional commodity spaces)に初めて足を踏み入れた
(1954) のもドブリューだ。比較的よく知られている業績としては、市場需要関数についての研究 (1974) がある。これは破壊的な結果として名高いドブリュー-ソネンシャイン-マンテルの定理を生み出した。
ドブリューの業績の全貌とその影響は、評価も難しいし、ましてきちんとまとめるのも困難なほどだ。ドブリューの主要な業績のサーベイは、ワルラス派一般均衡理論のまとめにある。1983 年にジェラール・ドブリューにノーベル記念章を与えるとき、ノーベル賞選考委員会はかれの生涯の全業績を挙げて、特に Theory of Value (1959) に下線を引いていた。かれはキャリアのほとんどを、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校で教えている。
