ロバート・J・オーマン (Robert J. Aumann), 1930-
ロバート・J・オーマンは、過去 40 年でネオワルラス派経済学とゲーム理論を特徴づけるようになった、数学的な興隆における主導的な存在の一人だ。オーマンは協力型ゲーム理論を通じて経済学にやってきた。
ネオワルラス派理論において、ロバート・J・オーマンは「連続体」経済における core equivalence の理論で最も有名かもしれない。オーマンはエージェントが無限にいる経済の分析に測度理論を導入した——そして「完全競争」シナリオを定式化した。古典的な 1964 年論文では、オーマンは不可算無限エージェントがいる場合には、エッジワース的core とワルラス的な均衡配分が等価であることを証明した——これによりcore convergence に関する将来の研究にlimit case を提供した。この結果が vacuous でないと証明するため、オーマンは次にこの「完全競争」シナリオでの均衡の存在を証明した (1966)。その道すがら、それまでは存在しなかった correspondence における「積分」の定義を提供した (1965)。
その前にオーマン (1962) はオッカムの剃刀をふるい、ワルラス派選択理論から選好の完備性という前提を排除するのに手を貸した。これまたF.J.アンスコンブと 1964 年に共著した古典論文で、オーマンは「主観確率」の概念を定式化した。これは以前にレオナルド・ サヴェッジが提案したもので、不確実性の下の選択理論を根本的に変えた。
ゲーム理論への貢献もまた画期的だった。オーマンは1959年にゲーム理論に取り組み、無限反復ゲームと有限反復ゲームを慎重に区別した。ベザレル・ ペレグとの1960年論文で、オーマンは coalitional game without transferable utility
(NTU) の概念を定式化した——これはかれのその後の研究における統括原理となる。マイケル・Maschlerと共著で (1963)、「交渉集合」の概念を導入した。1974 年にオーマンはベイズ型ゲームにおける「相関均衡」を同定。1975 年にはさらにシャープレー値におけるconvergence theoremを証明。1976 年には「共有知識」概念を定式化して定義した。同じく1976 年には、ロイド・シャープレーと未完論文を執筆し、limit of means 基準を使って完全フォーク理論を証明した。
オーマンにとって、ゲーム理論は明らかに「もっと一般理論」なのだ。経済分析におけるゲーム理論の役割についての考察は、 Aumann (1985) で見事に述べられている。2005年にはノーベル経済学賞を、同じくゲーム理論の経済学への応用に功績のあったロバート・シェリングと共同受賞。
